Dermaroller

The Dermaroller is a hand held device which has both cosmetic and medical applications. It is considered to be the modern day magic wand of skin care which can roll back the years. It is simple in concept, yielding magnificent results.

The Dermaroller family comprises of cosmetic hand held rollers designed for home use and rollers for Percutaneous Collagen Induction which is done in the surgery.

The home care roller (C8) can dramatically improve absorption of your skin care products and maintain your professional treatments. The medical rollers are designed to treat acne scars, ageing or wrinkles around eyes, mouth and cheeks, thinning of the skin due to sun damage and loss of elasticity. Studies are still ongoing on the treatment of stretch marks.

Use of Dermaroller Home Care (C8)

Only a maximum of 0.3% of the active ingredients of your favourite cream actually reaches the dermis where it is intended to work, 99.7% is wasted in your towel, pillow or cottonwool. This is because the skin has a thick protective layer called the stratum corneum that acts as a barrier against intruding bacteria, dirt and other environmental influences, including the ingredients of many skincare products.

The Dermaroller will increase infiltration of active substances into the skin. This roller looks like a small paint roller, and is equipped with 192 micro needles, which are so fine they can barely be seen by the naked eye. Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates micro-channels through which any substance applied will gain access to the deeper and viable skin layers. Scientists have confirmed the efficacy of the DERMAROLLER beyond any doubt, proving that it vastly enhances the absorption of active ingredients. The treatments are almost painless and there are no known negative side effects.

Effectiveness of the Dermacare Dermaroller

The uppermost skin-layer, the epidermis, is a brick-like structure of scales. The micro-needles only push them aside, forming tiny micro-pores. While the Dermaroller rolls over the skin the previous applied substance (cosmetics only) is transported into the deeper skin layers. Parallel to this action the stratum corneum acts like a long term depot to retain the active substance.

Please Note

The Dermaroller is only a tool for enhancement. If your skin care product does not contain any active substances there will not be a pronounced effect.

Dermaroller Medical Use

All treatments done with the medical rollers are done by a trained physician and the use of an anaesthetic cream.

Collagen Induction Therapy

Wrinkles, age-related skin changes and scars can become an emotional burden for the effected person. The standard procedures to date have been deep acid peeling or laser resurfacing. These treatments remove the protective epidermis and cause a 2nd degree burn thus forcing the skin to produce a new tissue layer. The down side to these treatments is that they are very invasive, cause long term inflammation and redness, make the skin very sun-sensitive and puts you into social isolation.

Collagen Induction Therapy done with the Dermaroller is a perfect alternative to achieve the same goal: a new collagen layer in the dermis. The Dermaroller is studded with 192 extremely fine needles, which when rolled over the skin causes tiny micro-wounds. The skin reacts to these wounds like it reacts to any other wound stimulating the natural production of collagen and elastin. This initial healing takes 5 – 7 days but the tissue remodeling continues for months after the treatment. Throughout the whole procedure the very top layer of skin remains intact so there are no negative side effects. A slight redness may persist for one to two days after treatment but not enough to cause you to stay out of the public eye. A follow up treatment can be done after 8 weeks, if needed, and a third treatment after 6 months.

Acne scars

The Dermaroller family consists of rollers of varying lengths that are used to treat acne scars and other scars. The procedure uses the extremely sharp, hard needles of the Dermaroller to perforate and soften the tough scar tissue. Simultaneously the needles stimulate and induce new collagen along the scar borderline and depressed tissue which then fills the depressed scar. In many test cases the treatment renewed the scar to the natural colour of the skin. The successful treatment of acne scarring requires setting realistic goals. Deep ice pick scars will soften but may need several treatments. Generalized scars can be softened and gradually filled with Dermaroller treatments. Some patients will need only one treatment, some multiple treatments and a small percentage will not respond at all. It is realistic to achieve a 50% improvement in the depth of scarring. Improvement of more than 50% is achievable but should be viewed as a bonus rather than a guarantee. Treatments can only be done at 3 month intervals to give the new collagen a chance to form.

Stretch Marks

The use of the Dermaroller for the treatment of stretch marks is still undergoing testing.
