IPL - intense Pulsed Light
(Pigmentation, sun damage/age spots, skin rejuvenation)
IPL is not a laser treatment. It is a light treatment that can be controlled by the use of filters and wavelengths depending on skin colour and condition. It is not invasive as it doesn't disrupt the outer layer of the skin and can address the effects of photoaging and sun damage.
This technology provides dramatic results for a variety of conditions including age-spots, sun induced pigmentation, symptoms of rosacea, birthmarks, unsightly capillaries on nose and cheeks, birthmarks and poikiloderma (red sun damage on neck and décolleté). IPL stimulates the natural production of collagen. Thus within the same procedure it is possible to target imperfections in the skin and stimulate the production of collagen leaving the skin tighter and more toned.
Although chemical peels have a place whereby they lighten pigmentation caused by pregnancy (and certain contraceptive pills), they are not able to disintegrate the melanin carrying cells as in an IPL treatment thus removing age spots and uneven skin tone.. Microdermabrasion addresses skin irregularities but it is not effective against complexion problems as in redness, flushing and dilated capillaries. Botox® gives outstanding results for lines and wrinkles. When used with IPL treatment the "canvas of the face " is cleared of brown and red imperfections.
“IPL stimulates the natural
production of collagen”
We at Famcare Aesthetic Centre use the Lumenis One system which has a fourth generation, medical standard IPL head. Because the light is an intense light and generates high energy to reach its target some treatments are not totally painless, but the discomfort is fleeting. Pigmented lesions will become considerably darker as they break up and are expelled but can be covered with cosmetics if unsightly. Some treatments will leave the patient looking flushed as after a good work out in the gym, but this fades within hours. It is possible to treat any problem area of the body, not only faces with treatments providing gradual, natural improvement with excellent long-term results. The number of treatments needed are dependant on your condition and skin type, some needing only one treatment, while others may need many more.
IPL treatments cannot be performed on tanned skin or a very dark complexion. It is necessary to stay out of the sun while having treatments and the use of a sunscreen at all times is essential.
Whether you are a man or a woman, if you are showing the signs of ageing and sun damaged skin, you should consider IPL to help you look as young and healthy as you feel.
